Area code 800: what it is
800 is a toll-free code, not tied to a city or state.
Calls to 800 numbers are free for the caller. They are used across the U.S., Canada and several Caribbean countries, and they can ring anywhere. The other toll-free codes are 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888.
Can a 800 caller be a scammer? Yes. Anyone can rent a toll-free number, and caller ID can be faked. A real business will have a toll-free number on its official website or the back of your card. If a 800 caller says they're from your bank, a government agency or a delivery company, hang up and call the number you already know.
